[image]This year’s European Outdoor Summit (EOS) which takes place 13th-15th October 2015, in Sheffield, UK, is already shaping up to be an unmissable event with an impressive line-up of motivational speakers, engaging break-out sessions, panels and workshops already announced.

The organisers are now delighted to announce former UK Deputy Prime Minister and MP for Sheffield Hallam, Nick Clegg, who will address delegates at the Summit. Nick will present the closing speech on Thursday 15th.

Leader of the UK political party, the Liberal Democrats, from 2007-2015, Nick took the party into government following the 2010 election, as part of the first Coalition in the UK since the Second World War; during his term he was accredited with putting many Liberal Democrat policies into practice.

Nick’s pan-European background makes him the ideal candidate to address an international summit such as EOS which attracts a global audience. With Dutch and Russian roots, which influenced his international outlook, Nick speaks French, German, Spanish and Dutch and has lived and worked in New York, Budapest and Brussels, where he worked for five years for the European Commission. EUROPEAN OUTDOOR GROUP
Outdoor Show 2015

Published by Mountainblog on .

33_OUTDOORINDUSTRYAWARD2014

Over the last three years, a rapidly changing market and increasing professionalism have been consistent themes in the outdoor industry.

Now is a good time to acknowledge that many businesses have stepped up their game and the latest figures we will publish at OutDoor will confirm that, overall, our sector remains strong.

However, it is also probably time to admit that in the context of greater competitiveness, we all face some problematic side effects.  At the sharp end of a growing industry, everything feels a little harsher and the pressure for short-term success threatens to dominate decision making.

With this in mind, the outdoor sector will have to make a crucial decision in the next few years.  Will we allow our industry to lapse into a race to the bottom or will we choose a different path?  In my opinion, much of our industry’s success over the decades has actually been based on a race to the top.  Instead of fighting over a set market size, we have used (often our own) passion as inspiration to grow the community, and with it the demand for our products and services.

The question is, are we capable of applying this same attitude  as competition gets more fierce and commercial reality is ever at our throats?  At the EOG, we are working on that basis and will soon launch our Europe-wide #ItsGreatOutThere initiative designed to encourage more of the general public to participate in outdoor activities – we hope that you will join us in promoting this campaign as it is the first step in a longer term effort to support the future of our industry.  Of course, projects like this are only a part of a much bigger picture and one that is underpinned by a key characteristic of our industry, which is the ability to co-operate together towards a common goal.

So, I hope many of you will like me, be thinking about a race to the top, when we gather in Friedrichshafen for the OutDoor show.

Mark Held, General Secretary, EOG.

There will be a busy programme of events organised by the EOG and others during OutDoor 2015.

European Outdoor Group Launches Programme of Sustainability Webinars

Published by Mountainblog on .

The EOG has announced the details of two events that will launch a programme of sustainability webinars, starting in the last week of May.

The first, on Tuesday 26th May, will focus on the alignment of brands’ own restricted substances lists with REACH’s substances of concern evidence.  The second webinar, on Tuesday 30th June, will cover the continual recycling of cotton/polyester textiles.  Both events will feature expert speakers and offer the opportunity for questions and discussion around internationally important subjects.

Pamela Ravasio, EOG CSR & sustainability manager, comments:

“I am delighted that we are now able to start rolling out the EOG sustainability webinars.  We have worked hard to develop a programme that will cover a range of topical and very relevant issues for businesses operating in the outdoor sector.  This is part of our wider sustainability work, which has recently included an expansion to the public resources section of the EOG website, with more developments in the pipeline.  All of this is designed to make sure that outdoor businesses have the latest information and insights about these important subjects, and to encourage debate and discussion.  The webinars will take place as we lead up to OutDoor in July, where once again there will be a lot of focus on sustainability.”

For full details of each webinar, download the information sheet here.  To register for one of the events, send an email to pamela.ravasio@europeanoutdoorgroup.com.

Outdoor News: European Outdoor Summit, Outdoor Sales Barometer, ISPO Shanghai

Published by Mountainblog on .

indexAccording to our latest figures, the outdoor sector is still performing well and remains a strong category within the wider sports market in Europe. However, it is true that there has been a slow down in growth and as the main industry body, our aim is to further strengthen our segment and provide useful insights and tools for the sector.  In this newsletter, we would like to share some of the main initiatives that we currently have in place to foster development, namely:

  • The European Outdoor Summit – a key event for exchange at the top management level (away from OutDoor and ISPO, where we are all unfortunately often too busy with daily business to focus in long term strategic ideas).
  • The Outdoor Sales Barometer – a sales tracker that allows companies to compare their own situation with overall retail developments.  This is free for retailers to join.
  • ISPO SHANGHAI – the new gateway to the Chinese market in the summer.
  • New sustainability assets.
  • Promotion of outdoor participation.
