2. The Safe CollectionEverything You Can Ask a Backpack

For over seven years, Ferrino has been focusing on the problem of the risk of being caught up in an avalanche, developing and testing products dedicated to this area.“ Comments Adriano Favre, Alpine Guide and Director of Alpine Rescue, Valle d’Aosta. The Doctor Federico Pratoof the Mountain Medical Centre of Aosta talks more detailed of the main causes of death in avalanches. “Analysis of the data (from field tests and statistical data) shows asphyxia (65%) as the main cause of death (second cause injury 20%, third hypothermia 15%). The probabilities of survival for a person buried in an avalanche are linked first of all to a time factor. According to international statistics (see graphic), the probabilities of surviving in cases of total burial without serious injury is 92% for the first 18 minutes, while this drops to 30% between 18 and 35 minutes.“ Marco Chiaberge is the Manager of the Product Development of Ferrino he says: “Our main target was to be the first company on the world market to integrate an airbag and breathing system together in the same backpack, and we were able to make this possible with Full Safe.“ The Ferrino Full Safe backpack has been selected by a research team consisting of experts recognised by the international scientific community, in order to complete an ambitious research project that is currently ongoing. The field testing research project, involving a relevant number of individuals, pursues the aim of collecting data on the efficiency of using individual protection systems, and analyse pathophysiology of the person swept up in an avalanche. The aim shared by Ferrino and the researchers involved isto be able to assess new strategies to reduce mortality caused by avalanche incidents. The coordinating institutions for the research are the Eurac Research of Bolzano and the Mountain Medicine Unit of the Valle d’Aosta Health Authority, with the aid ofthe Department of Biomedical Sciences of Padua University and the Institute of Molecular Bioimaging and Physiology of the NRC, Milan, supported by the Italian National Alpine Cliff and Cave Rescue Corps for technical and safety aspects. The surprising preliminary results of this research, which is unique at world level, have been revealed to the international scientific community dealing with mountain medicine during the course of several recent medical conferences, including the 7th World Congress of Mountain & Wilderness Medicine in Telluride, Colorado (USA).
