VAUDE A new generation of puffy

Ski-touring can be a frosty affair in midwinter. This is when you really need excellent moisture management in each of your layers; there’s a fine line between overcooling and too much moisture. The Bormio Jacket is there to help – it’s an athletic insulation jacket with innovative Polartec® Alpha® technology.

Cold temperatures and sweat don’t usually go together, but everyone who loves winter sports knows the feeling of being drenched in sweat after a ski tour or long powder run. There are plenty of synthetic fills that still work somewhat when wet, but they don’t transfer sweat outward and offer only limited breathability. The fact is that insulation jackets are often only pulled out of a pack during breaks in winter.   Some people make do by changing their base layers at the peak, but that’s not exactly a healthy choice when it’s -10°C in icy winds and snow.

Optimal insulation for top performance

The new VAUDE Bormio Jacket is the latest product in our “climate research in the mountains” and sets new standards of breathable insulation paired with a high thermal rating. The innovative Polartec® Alpha® fill offers full-stretch insulation with unprecedented functionality for endurance sports in winter. The secret is in the fabric structure – Alpha is not a batting, but a knit fabric. Its open structure leaves gaps for dynamic airflow, while sweat in the form of vapor can be transferred away twice as fast as in classic insulation (up to 19/l/m2/24 h). It is made of 100% polyester, does not absorb moisture and maintains insulation values while wet. In addition, the fabric is stretchy and highly compressible.

An air permeable shell is used in the Bormio Jacket that also provides good moisture transfer. In high sweat zones, such as under the arms, stretch inserts increase mobility and moisture transfer. With a light DWR treatment and close fitting hood, this insulation jacket is great as a thermal mid layer or as an outer layer for high output activities.

Bormio Pants: warmth on tour

Matching the jackets, VAUDE offers the Bormio Pants with an extra shot of warmth to wear underneath! A close fitting pair of thermal pants with full stretch, they allow Polartec Alpha’s special qualities to be put to best use. Seams are sewn with a special stretch technique that guarantees absolute freedom of movement. Elastic fleece inserts provide form and stretch; a wide elastic waist ensures the perfect fit. Thanks to a narrow, sporty cut, the Bormio Pants serve well as a first thermal layer under a hardshell pants. The ¾-length that ends at the calf is designed for use with ski boots. A body-mapping principle was put to optimal use for cold sensitive zones such as knees, thighs and seat making the Bormio Pants ideal for skiing – a classic stop-and-go activity.

The Bormio Jacket and Pants can be used for an almost unlimited number of cold-weather, high-output activities: ski tours, mountaineering, ice climbing, hiking, biking, running, cross-country skiing and more – outdoor athletes with a hunger for motion want to get outdoors everywhere and in every weather – not just freeze.

This sporty, high-tech outfit will be available in men’s and women’s versions and in retail stores starting in Fall 2014.
