Reinhold Messner described the Dolomites as the “most beautiful mountains in the world“. Mountain bikers will also feel at ease and can experience magnificent scenery, a variety of touring opportunities, excursions through the wild and romantic Langental or biking trips to the “City of Stones”.

The best-known tours of the Dolomites include Sella Ronda, unmissable because of its spectacular scenery. Crossing four Dolomite passes requires physical fitness, but the riders are rewarded with spectacular views over Sella group and Marmolada.

The HERO Bike Festival will take place between 16 and 19 June 2016 and is packed with races, events, concerts, glamour and discussions, and around 5,000 bikers from 50 countries are expected to arrive. It will be a HERO GREEN EVENT, which means it fulfills sustainability criteria which the province of South Tyrol demands from all events in the area. The new generation of bikers sprints head on 17 June 2016 with the HERO Kids. The professional bikers wait until the following day to cross the start line of the famous HERO South Tyrol Dolomites. Amateur bikers will take to the roads on 19 June 2016: every biker is welcome on the Sellaronda Bike Day. In fact, four Dolomite passes will be traffic-free on this day. Don’t worry if you can’t be there that day, as the Sellaronda Bike Day returns on 11 September 2016 during the EcoDolomites Weekend at the E-Bike-Festival.

Südtirol Gardenissima: Getting The Best From The World’s Longest Giant Slalom

Published by Mountainblog on .

Banner-CS_Gardenissima-def
Super G skis, the right head and eye protection, curved poles and fluoro wax: technical advice on getting the most from an Alpine skiing race as tough as the Südtirol Gardenissima which marks the close of the Val Gardena skiing season on April 2.

There is now less than a month to go to April 2 and that means that the Südtirol Gardenissima and the end of the Val Gardena skiing season are both getting seriously close. Any training you can do now has to be honed to perfection. Having worked so hard to lay the foundations for success throughout the winter, you’ll need to arrive at the start line of this long slalom with the very best of specialist equipment.

Super G skis for a giant slalom to remember
Anyone that breathes the intoxicating air of the Dolomites all year round and has grown up with the Südtirol Gardenissima will advise you to avoid giant slalom skis and instead go for Super G versions because the extra seconds you might shave off in the first stretch of the giant slalom can easily be lost in the final one where what you really need is improved glide. So the perfect solution is Junior Super G skis of between 190 cm and 195 cm. They have enough flex to play on the bends and a 28 – 34-metre radius – in other words, you’ll be able to tackle the Südtirol Gardenissima’s big curves beautifully.

Ski with your head
Another pivotal factor in such a long, challenging race is taking care of your head, absolutely essential if you’re to hang in there for six kilometres. If you want to ski in absolute safety, then you’ll need an approved yet aerodynamic helmet, possibly fibreglass. Do not go for helmets with an incorporated visor. Vision-wise, we don’t recommend using sunglasses. It’s better to opt for aerodynamic goggles with mid-light coloured or, better still, polarised lens to give you a clear view even in the final stretch where the light dims because of the surrounding woods. You’ll also be exhausted by then and that can play nasty tricks on you so every little helps.

Curved poles and fluoro wax
The length of the run and the incredible physical toll it will take can mean you’ll be feeling a little out of it and so even the tiniest detail can really be vital to your performance. That includes using curved ski poles which you’ll be able to keep close to your body, thereby avoiding knocking against the gates. Lastly, there will be spring weather on April 2 and seasoned skiers recommend a high performance fluoro wax: 100% fluoro is best – apply three layers after rubbing it well with granular snow.

Third Alpe di Siusi Half Marathon on July 5th

Published by Mountainblog on .

The Alpe di Siusi race is back once more on the customary date of the first Sunday in July. The participants will be running alongside some top Kenyan marathon runners, who are honing their skills on their annual summer training camp on the Alpe di Siusi. And, for all those who want a sneak preview of next season’s running wear, the Alpe di Siusi Running Expo is on at the end of July.

MM_Alpe_di_Siusi

The Alpe di Siusi Half Marathon is one to choose not for a “PB”, but rather for the location, and to enjoy a run in an unspoilt countryside and exult in all the breathtaking beauty that Europe’s highest mountain plateau has to offer. The Dolomite peaks Sasso Piatto, Sasso Lungo and Sciliar seem to literally smile down upon you as you run. And then there’s the height: the race takes place at 1,800 – 2,200 m, making it both hard work and utterly mesmerising at the same time.

The Alpe di Siusi Half Marathon is the jewel in the crown of our sporting offer for summer”, says Alex Andreis, Alpe di Siusi Marketing Manager. “It is framed by a running park of 180 km of trails designed for top runners or lovers of the sport who choose us as the ideal place for training”.

MM_Alpe_di_Siusi-1

And after a winter season as star of the cross-country skiing scene, the Alpe di Siusi is all set to metamorphose into a “complete gym” for runners too, with a summer dedicated to running.
It kicks off on June 28th, when the plateau will host the races of the Kenyan Marathon Team managed by Gianni Demadonna, who has been taking his champions here to train for years.
We then move on to the top event of July 5th, the Half Marathon (closed number of 500 runners) and round it all off with the Alpe di Siusi Running Expo. For the fourth year running, the Expo will be displaying next season’s running shoes on the 26th and 27th of July, giving us all the chance to try them out on the paths of the Alpe di Siusi Running Park.
