The connection between doping and mountaineering is a controversial issue but at the same time it is also a cold-shoulder topic.

First of all we need to distinguish between mountain sports and mountaineering that, even if it is a practice that has become more a “performance matter” in recent years, is still a very different kind of game. That’swhy alpinism is much more than just a simple sport: it includes other fundamental ingredients like exploration and uncontrollable risks that are not usual on a common playing field.

It is sure that drugs can make a difference to reaching the summit and this could be the subject of ethical discussions – why not?

These are the topics developed in a UIAA document officially presented in a meeting promoted by Kiku at the International Mountain Summit in Bressanone.
