Thursday 9th June 2016 the FIS  Council has elected the Organisers of the 2021 FIS Freestyle & Snowboard, Nordic and Alpine events as well as for the 2020 FIS Ski Flying World Championships.

The final presentations by the five candidates for the 2020/2021 FIS World Championships took place on Tuesday 7th June 2016 with the highly-anticipated decision announced at 19:00 in Cancun (MEX).

Planica (SLO) was unanimously elected as host of the 2020 FIS Ski Flying World Championships.

With its new state-of-the-art facilities, Planica will put on another unforgettable Ski Flying World Championships with great fan support and high-level facilities,” said FIS President Gian Franco Kapser.

Also unanimously elected was Zhangjiakou/Genting Resort (CHN) for the FIS Freestyle Ski & Snowboard World Championships 2021. The resort will also host the 2022 Olympic Winter Games Freestyle and Snowboarding competitions, making the election very timely.

I can’t think of a more appropriate host for the 2021 Freestyle Skiing and Snowboarding World Championships,” said Kasper. “Ideally, the World Championships will serve as the final test event for the Olympics, giving the Organisers the best possible experience to prepare for the Games. It is also one of the key developing regions for Freestyle Skiing and Snowboard, making it a perfect fit to develop and promote the sports strongly over the next five years.”

The fifth time was the charm for Cortina d’Ampezzo (ITA), which was unanimously elected as the host of the 2021 FIS Alpine Ski World Championships. The Italian resort, located in the heart of the Dolomites is also a regular host of the ladies’ Audi FIS Ski World Cup.

Cortina and the Italian Ski Federation (FISI) have shown a real commitment to hosting the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships. They have outlined a series of detailed plans to develop the resort for the marquee event with a strong legacy for the future and we look forward to going there in 2021.” said Kasper of the Italian success.

The Nordic World Ski Championships will be hosted by Oberstdorf. The German town won with 11 ballots against its competitors Trondheim (4) and Planica (2). It was the fifth time that the resort bid to host the World Championships.

Oberstdorf has put its heart into securing the 2021 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships,” said Kasper. “We have an Organiser with massive experience hosting both annual World Cup events and previous editions of the World Championships and there is not a doubt in my mind that they will do an excellent job in 2021.”
