The first #YCC between August 25th and 29th  2015

Too old to participate in the minis, too young to register for one of the UTMB® events, but with a great desire to run and participate in the big trail-running party… there lacked, during the UTMB® week, an animation for young trail-runners.  This has now been achieved by the creation if a new challenge aimed at the young : the #YCC !

Organised in collaboration with the UCPA and the commune of Courmayeur, the  #YCC is a challenge aimed at the young aged between 16 and 19 (cadet and junior categories), combining a Sporting Challenge and a Video Contest.

The sporting challenge starts on Tuesday, August 25th with a prologue in Chamonix of 3 loops of 700m, followed the next day by a trail running event of around 15km and 1500m ascent, in Courmayeur and in total autonomy. If the winner’s time is estimated at an hour and a half, the time limit for the slowest is fixed at four hours.

In parallel, and until 12:00 on August 28th, the young runners can realise a video (or a slide show) of a maximum of 3 minutes duration, made either alone or in a team. The subject choice is free but the video must, however, promote the values of Trail-running by telling a story, in the form of fiction, documentary, testimony, filmed diary, animation etc. with a humorous or critical tone… The videos will be broadcast on  social networks and the prize winning videos will be broadcast on the giant screen, at the place du Triangle de l’Amitié, during prize giving.

It will also be possible to register just for the Sporting Challenge according to certain conditions. More information to be found on the web-site.

Registration: exclusively by internet between May 13th and July 10th 2015. 200 runners maximum – Men and women, born between 1996 et 1999, licenced or not. Cost : 30 € (of which 1.50 € is an eco participation)

Environment : Since the first hour, conservation of the environment has been an absolute priority for the UTMB® organisers who continue to search to minimise, measure or control the impacts of the race and to educate the general public (runners, accompanying persons and local populations). These effects are visible concerning transport, communications, waste management and the protection of natural areas.

TheUltra-Trail du Mont-Blanc® – COP21 : J-100

First stage for the  Tri-Tour project

In December 2015, France is hosting, in Paris, and chairing the 21st conference, for the parties concerned, concerning the United Nations outline agreement  on climate control: COP21/CMP11, also called Paris 2015. This is a crucial step, because it has to end with a new international agreement on climate, applicable in all countries, with the objective of maintaining global warming below 2°C.

The sporting players, through their mission to educate about the environment and sustainable development, are particularly concerned, whether their activities take place in an urban or natural environment! In this framework, the  Secretary of State for Sport’s mission for Sport and Sustainable development and the NGO, WWF, joined forces to publish a collection of about twenty remarkable initiatives in the field of sport. The UTMB® organisation was chosen for its measures and concrete actions answering, to the global stakes of fighting against climatic disorder and becoming integrated in to a global approach to sustainable development within sport during the years to come. This collection will be broadcast and presented, at the end of 2015, under the mobilisation of civil society before the COP21 « Climate Change Conference », to be hosted in Paris in December.

Among the different initiatives planned by the ministry, Monsieur Thierry Braillard, Secretary of State for Sport will launch the  “Tri-tour” project in Chamonix during the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc®. It will consist of a bus which is fitted out and which will go from one sporting event to another to strengthen the idea of sorting waste and will be pedagogically animated by event planners and local authorities. A meeting between the Secretary of State and Ségolène Royal shows the interest that she has in this project which could be financed by the ADEME (agency for energy savings under the supervision of the MEDDE). This action of raising awareness about the sorting of waste will make a grand tour of France  to attend several sporting events.

Mobilisation to renovate footpaths: As from 2008 the Espace Mont-Blanc initiated an ethical contract with the organisers of sporting and cultural events in the hopes of achieving the objectives put down in their Scheme for Sustainable Development, included in which: the protection of a fragile environment and the respect for its flora and fauna.

Moreover, in 2013, a convention was signed between the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc®, Asters (Conservatory of natural areas in the Haute-Savoie) and the Université de Savoie so as to train students about the impact of sporting events in the mountains, and to raise awareness among a team of volunteers (the Ambassadors of the Environment) about the problems encountered in fragile environments.

This year within the Espace Mont-Blanc’s ethical Charter and the convention between the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc®, Asters and the Université de Savoie Mont-Blanc, a pilot action will be carried out, at the beginning of the season,  in collaboration with the commune of Les Contamines-Montjoie in the heart of the Contamines-Montjoie nature reserve, to improve, in a durable fashion, that state of the footpaths.

This project concerns the sector between the Plan des Dames and the  Col du Bonhomme. It consists of a low marsh at  altitude: a humid zone, with numerous rare and protected patrimonial species. This zone is a priority area for the nature reserve’s preservation and management plan. This area has a very heavy footfall: Tour du Mont-Blanc, passage of races (UTMB®), day-hikes… Where one can see erosion, gullying of the footpath, an increase to the number of additional paths, trampling and a general degradation of the site.

The aim is to give hikers and trail-runners a footpath which is practicable in all weathers, even in the rain, and to limit the multiplication of extra paths, the principal cause of the deterioration of the humid zones. The work aims at channeling the water using stone channels, making the principal footpath more solid and the construction of small walls to prevent hikers and trail-runners from taking side paths or short cuts.
